Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge and South Padre Island


The Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge is just a short drive outside Harlingen. This huge refuge is home to thousands of birds, as well as the ocelot, a small and elusive wild cat native to this area. You can spend the day biking, fishing, hiking, hunting, or just capturing nature on your camera.

Next to the refuge lies South Padre Island, the worlds’ longest barrier island that’s home to some of the most undeveloped ocean beach in America. There’s plenty to keep you occupied: Catch a glimpse of a dolphin playing in the water, ride horseback on the shore as the sun sets, or grab a surfboard and hit the waves.

Harlingen Arts and Heritage Museum


History buffs will love spending time at the unique Harlingen Arts and Heritage Museum. It includes several historical buildings, including the home of the town’s founder, Lon C. Hill; Harlingen’s first hospital; and the Paso Real Stagecoach Inn. Spend the day exploring the collection of Harlingen and Texas artifacts and browsing the latest arts exhibits featured on the grounds.

After exploring the museum, you can visit the Iwo Jima Memorial & Museum to see a huge, full-scale replica of the famous Iwo Jima statue as well as a whole museum devoted to the fateful battle.


Harlingen Main Street is a spot for art, culture, and fun. The strip of independent shops allows you to peruse jewelry, books, sweets, antiques, and more. Look for all the beautiful murals scattered around town or schedule a Mural Tour.
